    The April sales report for the European car market has been released, showing overall results remaining at relatively low levels.

    1.1 Europe Battery Electric Vehicle Sales in April

    Germany leads in sales, but the gap with other countries is not significant.

    1.2 Europe Plug-in Electric Vehicle Sales in April

    • Spain: 5,060 units
    • Sweden: 5,713 units
    • Norway: 280 units

    From the perspective of major European countries, there is no significant growth in new energy vehicles this year. Currently, Germany and the UK have canceled subsidies, with France being one of the few remaining countries offering subsidies, albeit with strict limitations on the subsidy catalog.

    2. Overview of Major Markets: DE, FR, UK

    Let’s take a closer look at the situation in the main countries with their sales figures.

    2.1 Gemany

    In April, Germany registered 243,102 passenger cars, of which 29,668 were pure electric vehicles, making up 12.2% of the total. Registrations of hybrid vehicles amounted to 75,182 units, showing a 26.4% increase compared to April 2023. Among these, plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 15,135 units, representing 6.2% of the total registrations.

    2.2 France

    In April 2024, total car sales in France were 146,979 units, an 11% year-on-year increase. With the support of subsidies, the market share of new energy vehicles in France was 24.3%, a year-on-year increase of 21.1%. Sales of pure electric vehicles saw a significant year-on-year increase of 45%, while sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles remained flat.     2.3 UK

    In April, new car registrations in the UK continued to grow, reaching 134,274 units, a year-on-year increase of 1.0%. This is the best market performance for April since 2021. However, due to March traditionally being a high sales month, there was a month-on-month decrease of 16.6%. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) saw the strongest growth, increasing by 22.1% and accounting for 7.8% of the market share. This was followed by hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), which grew by 16.7%, making up 13.1% of the demand.

    2.4 Norway

    In April, total car sales in Norway were 11,241 units. The market share of plug-in electric vehicles was 91.0%, essentially unchanged from 91.1% in the same period last year.

    2.5 Sweden

    In April 2024, total car sales in Sweden were 21,977 units, an increase of about 7% year-on-year. The market share of plug-in electric vehicles in Sweden for April was 56.9%, slightly up from 55.7% in the same period last year. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 30.9% with sales of 6,813 units, while plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 26.0% with sales of 5,713 units.
